Champions for Kids - Spin into Action with Spinbrush #Spinbrush4kids

I love the idea of simple service projects, especially ones that I can participate in with my kids!  This week, F&B and I got the chance to work on a simple service project with Champions for Kids and Spinbrush, called Spin into Action!  Champions for Kids is encouraging kids and families to donate toothbrushes and other children’s items to a local hospital, shelter, or foster care facility. It's a great project for kids to get involved in, giving them a chance to make a difference in their communities in a tangible way.

Faith made two goodie bags for girls around her age--
Spinbrushes, toothpaste, markers, notepads and craft kits

The three of us headed out to Walmart to purchase Arm & Hammer Spinbrush toothbrushes or Tooth Tune toothbushes, along with other goodies to make up some summer fun packs for kids to take to one of our local shelters.  Tooth Tunes play two minutes of music, to encourage brushing for the right amount of time, while Spinbrushes spin to help make brushing easier.  Each kid made up two packs, for kids their own age, with Spinbrushes & toothpaste, along with craft kits, notebooks and markers for Faith's bags and building sets and racing cars for Ben's.  We also took the opportunity to put together a bag of food donations as well.  This has been on my "meaning-to-do" list this summer, so Faith helped me get it done in conjunction with our simple service project!

Ben's goodie bags for little boys--
Spinbrushes, toothpaste, Army toys and Hot Wheels

When we shared our plan with local friends and neighbors, we had others offer us donations too.  If you can, ask for help with your service projects!  We found that people really do want to help, especially if you give them the opportunity to do so.

Springs Rescue Mission on Las Vegas Street

Since we now live in Colorado Springs, we had to research where to take our donations and decided on Springs Rescue Mission.  Gary, the volunteer leader we met, offered us a small tour of the facility and it is amazing to see the work they do--from the food pantry and clothing closet, even furniture for those who are transitioning to housing of their own.  They also offer hot meals six nights per week, classes for job seekers and those who need to obtain their GED, along with tutoring for children who have fallen behind due to housing uncertainty.  They now even own a motel that has been remodeled into temporary housing for families in crisis.  F&B learned quite a bit about it and Faith is interested in more of how she can help.  (Note: Since our tour of Springs Rescue Mission included areas with clients, we did not take photos once inside, in order to respect their privacy.)

The Spinbrushes were the base for our simple service project.

Would you like to participate in your own simple service project?  Champions for Kids and Spinbrush can help with just four easy steps:
  1. Gather your community to collect fun toys and colorful children’s items (like books, games, blankets, and toothbrushes)!
  2. Count the number of items you collected and take photos!
  3. Donate the items to a local hospital, shelter, or foster care agency in your community to give kids hope, comfort and fun in challenging situations.
  4. Double your impact by reporting your project at championsforkids.org/share during the month of July 2013. Let us know how many people were involved and how many items you collected, and Spinbrush® will make a matching donation of up to 1,000 Tooth Tunes™ toothbrushes (total) through Champions for Kids to help children in need!

Make sure to connect with Spinbrush on Twitter and Facebook too, and visit their website for a printable $2 off coupon for Spinbrushes, to help maximize your donation.  Don't forget to report your own service project at Champions for Kids!
