Finally, another BlogHer book review! It never fails that the emails for them come in when I'm in the car, so I can't answer quickly enough on my phone. Even better, it's for a book I would have chosen for myself--A Good American by Alex George.
What is your family's story? That is what James, the narrator, sets out to tell in Alex George's debut novel. Frederick and Jette leave Germany to discover a new life in the early 20th century. Rather than through Ellis Island, the couple ends up starting out in New Orleans, eventually settling in Missouri. The story winds through their life, through the pivotal American events since the early 1900s, though the future generations. It's the story of friends, of family, of food, and always of music.
