Summer Reading Programs for Kids in Colorado Springs

Updated for 2023!

When I was growing up, one of my favorite things in the summertime was the summer reading program at our local library.  Typically, I'd rush through the first 20 books for the big prize and try to see how many more books I could read (side note: it was always a three-digit goal).

Now as a mom, I love that my kids love to read too! Since we're living in Colorado Springs, there are lots of great summer reading programs to choose from.  The kids pick their favorites and keep a personal Goodreads list of what they've read for an all summer total.

Pikes Peak Library District

Pikes Peak Libraries are introducing a new Summer Adventure Program for Ages 0 - 18! The summer program engages participants with activities that promote lifelong learning and combat summer reading loss, using Beanstack, an online program that awards virtual badges for completing learning challenges and provides personalized reading recommendations.

Sign up here for the different age groups.

Security Public Library

Security Public Library offers programs for children and teens for summer reading, using the theme Building a Better World.  Participants earn prizes for 10 hours (children) or 20 hours (teens) or summer reading.  There are also movie days, craft days, story times, and other special events throughout the summer.

Fort Carson/Peterson AFB DOD Libraries

For military families, the libraries at Fort Carson and Peterson AFB offer summer reading programs for dependent children.  This year's theme is Reading By Design and features themed story times, activities and more.

Barnes & Noble

Kids from 1st through 6th grade can earn a free book at Barnes & Noble.  Stop by a participating location and pick up a reading journal, or download one online.  Read 8 books, record the titles and favorite part, then redeem the journal for a one of a select choice of titles!

Get more information and the reading log here.

For other online options for summer reading, we've also found:
  • Chuck E Cheese - Read daily for two weeks and redeem the calendar for 10 game tokens
  • Scholastic - Read and log minutes all summer long, unlock activities and rewards, and enter to win prizes.
  • Sync Audiobooks for Teens - This one caught my eye!  Each week, teens 13+ can download two free audiobooks.  We've been listening to more in the car, so we're looking forward to finding some new titles.
  • Lifeway Christian Stores - It looks like this one no longer exists, definitely sad about it.  It was 6 books and scripture verses to earn a book.
