The Star {Review}

Are you looking for a sweet family movie to enjoy?  We can't say enough good things about Sony Picture's and AFFIRM Film's The Star, a retelling of the Christmas Story from the perspective of the animals!

While it came out over the holidays, we enjoyed it just this past weekend and I know we will definitely see it again.  It has the makings of a holiday tradition movie for my family.

The Star features an impresses cast to voice the animals, who take the viewer through the Christmas story in Luke, via the story of a special donkey:
A small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day, he finds the courage to break free and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams.

On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a lovable sheep who has lost her flock, and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations, along with three wisecracking camels. Bo and his new friends follow the star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told.

What can we say about the Star?

It is one of the best family movies we have seen in a long time.  The writers did a wonderful job staying true to the Biblical story, the animals are sweet characters the viewer wants to succeed, and I  absolutely loved how Mary adopted Bo as her pet.  There are a couple of mildly scary scenes (as Herod sends a henchman and two dogs to chase Mary and Joseph) that might frighten the littlest viewers, but the movie is free from violence, language, and other inappropriate items.

We definitely feel like The Star could be a great part of family Christmas traditions.

Maybe watching the movie and then reading various adaptations of the Christmas story to see how they compare?  We have many great books of the Christmas story--board books, counting books, ones featuring favorite characters and more.

Acting out the Christmas story and The Star with finger puppets or figurines?  We have multiple nativities, from expensive and imported to kid-friendly ones I purchased when the kids were little, perfect for an activity like this.

No matter what you choose, we'd definitely recommend adding The Star to your family's movie library.
